'Black Knight' sword, late 13thC.
German or Polish Rider Sword, late 13th century.
One of the most classic medieval swords type... and also most functional, versatil, simple, wide and commonly used for more than two centuries... Essential type.
In my opinion - also most beautiful because of it`s simple form.
But: 'No decorations - doesn`t means easy to make... '
Some say that this type is just boring with it`s form - but actually each example is in fact different by it`s measurements and details. We will find them in museums all European countries. We will find them in manuscripts like 'I:33', 'Maciejowski Bible', etc. They started to appear in the late 12th and among other types, were still present to the end of 14th century. Used by infantry and riders, mostly with shield when, in early 14th century, they started to make longer grip, for second hand and plate armour slowly replaced chainmails and big shields. But even then form of these swords stay the same - only the grip became getting longer - to become a longsword type, with all it`s varieties...

This would be a classic example of 13th century knightly sword. There are plenty examples of that family swords in European museums. Every one is of course different, unique. We know other historical sources, like manuscripts, sculptures, effigies and many others, with examples of this kind of sword. They are most popular from early 13th to the middle of 14th century. This one was inspired by swords from museum in Poland and Germany, which are dated to second half of 13th century.

Classic sword means also a good sword, as an universal weapon used on the ground and also from horse back. It has a long blade for better range, it is very light and that why balanced slightly forward to have enough power. Also, when used by a rider, it doesn`t need much force, just lift the sword and let the blade fall down. That why it is true battle sword with all features of original examples. Simultaneously it is light and quick when it comes to fencing techniques.
