Cross-sections types
Medieval Swords Blades Cross-sections types
Here is my diagram which shows blade cross sections, very usefull tip to understand construction of the blades and their variations / types...
Use description in upper right corner to learn more.
This is third and updated version of this diagram.
Notice that this contains ONLY MEDIEVAL TYPES - we know some more cross-section types but they are later...
The variety of blade cross-sections in medieval swords reflects not only the needs of the battlefield, but also technological possibilities.
Below is an updated diagram showing the types and sub-types of sword blade cross-sections from the period 900-1400, showing cross-sections around the shoulders (under the guard) and around the point. You can also see schematic examples of blades, because their shape / outline, and widths, were directly related to the types of cross-sections.
On the timeline, I have also shown the time range in which each type appeared and dominated.
In the near future, I will do a series of posts describing each type in more detail with examples.
